Find out how retainers keep your teeth in their new straight position.
Orthodontic treatment is a considerable investment, but the results will last you a lifetime – providing you complete the retainer phase of your treatment journey.
What are retainers?
Retainers are orthodontic appliances worn at the end of treatment to hold your teeth in their new position.
There are two types of retainers:
- Removable retainers – these are like a very thin mouthguard and are generally worn only at night.
- Fixed bonded retainers – these consist of a fine wire that is glued behind your teeth to keep them in position.
Your orthodontist will advise you which option is most appropriate for your particular case.
The retainer phase
Retainers are a very important part of your orthodontic treatment and failure to follow your orthodontist’s advice when wearing them can result in your teeth moving back towards their previous position.
We will advise you of how long you need to wear your retainer but in most cases it is recommended you wear them all the time for the first three months, post-treatment, then just at night. Removable retainers can be taken out when eating, brushing and flossing, so you won’t have any problems maintaining your oral hygiene. This also makes the retainers easy to keep clean.
If you have been fitted with a fixed bonded retainer, we will provide you with instructions on how best to clean your teeth while this remains fitted.
A long-term commitment
Although you may wish for your treatment to end once your braces or aligners have been removed, it is important you follow your orthodontist’s instructions when it comes to this final phase. Retainers must be viewed as a long-term commitment if the improved alignment of the teeth following treatment is to be maintained.
At Neo Orthodontics, the cost of your treatment journey includes retainers as well as follow-up care for 18 months, post treatment. During these follow-up appointments, we’ll make sure your retainer is keeping your teeth in their new position. In between these appointments it is your responsibility to wear your retainer.
